How to manage wet grains for storage

At Ag in Motion (AIM) in July, grain storage experts emphasized the importance of monitoring moisture and temperature of stored crops as these factors affect grain quality. Weather unpredictability on the Prairies means farmers must be prepared to intervene when natural drying conditions fall short. Mixed flow dryers are essential tools when crops come off the field wet.

Ron Kleuskens, Technical Sales Representative with AGI, highlighted the importance of planning ahead when considering grain drying solutions. “When Mother Nature doesn’t do her bit to dry the crop, so they don’t need any additional attention, that’s when a grain dryer is an invaluable piece of equipment for farmers,” he says.

He also noted that while recent dry seasons have reduced demand for on-farm drying, weather cycles are unpredictable, and infrastructure decisions should not be rushed. Proper planning allows time for necessary electrical work and system integration, ensuring readiness when drying becomes essential.
