The Opportunity 

The Mechanical Design Manager, AGI Food will be experienced in preparing clear, complete, detailed, and accurate designs and drawing packages for custom manufacturing equipment from concept sketches through to detailed manufacturing drawings. The Mechanical Design Manager shall lead Design and Manufacturing Technology transfer initiatives, project design assignments and contribute to the implementation of standards, best practices, and continual improvement. 

The Team

Reporting to the VP and GM of AGI Food Platform, the Mechanical Design Manager will work closely with other engineers, project managers, suppliers, installers and construction teams.  The Mechanical Design Manager will establish the team structure utilizing Designer Engineers from several of AGI’s global operations as well further expansion of the group through recruitment into the centralized location in Illinois.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technology transfer (Design and Manufacturing) between multiple AGI Global locations.
  • Lead and build a Global Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering Team to support manufacturing and technology transfer initiatives.
  • Design and produce 3D models of proposed equipment solutions and associated piping, support structures, electrical cable trays and conduits as required.
  • Produce detailed 2D CAD general arrangement and manufacturing drawings for plant layouts and equipment designs.
  • Work with suppliers and incorporates supplier drawings into 3D models and 2D drawings.
  • Create detailed Bill of Materials.
  • Take part in Engineering calculations as required.
  • Responsible for consideration of safety within design, installation methodologies, and lifting plans.
  • Participate in site surveys and field measurements.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DFM/A) methodologies and participate in the manufacturing and assembly reviews.
  • Ensure all designs are thorough checked and in accordance to internal Design and Documentation standards.
  • Lead or attend internal and external design reviews and progress meetings on all aspects of assigned projects.
  • Work closely with other Engineers, Project Mangers, suppliers, installers and construction teams.
  • Assist Project Managers and estimators where required.
  • Review and approve vendor equipment approval drawings.
  • Identify and communicate deviations from scope of work.
  • Lead project design, distribute and check other team members’ work.
  • Lead or attend internal, client and vendor meetings in a professional manner.
  • Understand customer requirements and expectations and develop/drive actions and schedules needed to support those program expectations.
  • Build and manage a team who is responsible for preparing clear, complete, detailed, and accurate designs and drawing packages for custom manufacturing equipment.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Contribute to the continual improvement of internal drawing standards and procedures, as well as manufacturing and assembly best practices.
  • Work as a member of a design or project team, collaborating with Sales, Engineering and Project Management in an effective manner.
  • Be aware of budget and schedule requirements on all work assigned. Make every effort to complete assigned work on budget and on schedule.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Treat all AGI and customer information in a confidential manner.
  • Understand and abide by AGI policies and procedures.
  • Inform management of problems or issues which affect the AGI’s ability to meet customer requirements.
  • Promptly inform management of any change in customer status or any information on customer business which may affect AGI’s relationship with the customer or with work in progress.
  • Work onsite at the company office in Lisle, IL in collaboration with other centralized cross-functional AGI teams.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering, or Diploma in Engineering / Design Technology or equivalent.
  • 5-10 years + previous 3D and 2D plant equipment design/drafting experience inclusive of responsibilities included in the Job Summary (ideally in agricultural, animal feed, food production, and material handling environment)
  • Knowledge of ASME, NFPA, and OSHA standards pertaining to Manufacturing equipment design
  • Comfortable with extensive international travel (averaging up to one week a month)
  • Autodesk AutoCAD 2D
  • Autodesk Revit 3D modelling
  • Solidworks 3D modelling
  • Autodesk BIM 360 experience is an asset
  • Strong written, verbal, mathematical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Management skills and previous supervision in an Engineering/Design environment
  • Strong written and verbal command of English language
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with employees from different divisions, different countries, and different time zones
  • Fluency in French and/or Portuguese is an asset
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite
